The Thatched Roof Gazebo

Master craftsmen built the octagonal gazebo with massive handhewn oak posts and beams that were locked together without nails. Wattle and daub was applied on the exterior. Thatch for the roof was shipped from Norfolk, England and master thatcher, Peter Slevin was contracted to thatch the roof.

Visitors to The Elizabethan Gardens can sit in this lovely 16th century style gazebo overlooking the Roanoke Sound and view the spot where Sir Walter Raleigh’s first expedition landed in the New World in 1585, followed by the first colonists two years later.
